How to Play Checkers Master

From basic rules to advanced strategies — everything you need to master the classic game of checkers.

1

The Board Setup

Checkers Master uses a standard 8×8 board. Each player starts with 12 pieces placed on the dark squares of the three rows closest to them. The board has 32 dark squares where all the action happens — light squares are never used.

  • Your pieces (red) start on the bottom three rows
  • The AI's pieces (purple) start on the top three rows
  • The two middle rows begin empty — this is the battlefield
2

Basic Movement

Regular pieces (men) move diagonally forward one square at a time, always staying on the dark squares. Use your mouse to click and drag a piece to an available square, or tap and drag on touch screens.

  • Pieces can only move forward diagonally (toward the opponent's side)
  • You can only move to an empty dark square
  • Each turn you move exactly one piece
  • If you have a capture available, you must take it
3

Capturing (Jumping)

To capture an opponent's piece, jump over it diagonally to the empty square beyond it. The jumped piece is removed from the board. If after a jump you can immediately jump another piece, you must continue jumping — this creates exciting multi-capture chain moves.

  • Jump over an adjacent opponent piece to an empty square beyond
  • The captured piece is removed from the board
  • Multi-jumps: chain captures in a single turn if possible
  • Captures are mandatory — if you can jump, you must jump
4

Becoming a King

When one of your pieces reaches the far edge of the board (the opponent's back row), it becomes a king. Kings are the most powerful pieces in checkers because they gain the ability to move and capture backward.

  • A king is typically marked with a crown or double stack
  • Kings move diagonally in any direction (forward and backward)
  • Kings can capture in any diagonal direction
  • Getting kings early gives you a significant advantage
5

Winning the Game

You win by capturing all of your opponent's pieces or by blocking them so they have no legal moves. The game can also end in a draw if neither player can win.

  • Capture all pieces: Remove every one of the opponent's 12 pieces
  • Block all moves: Your opponent has pieces but none can move
  • Plan several moves ahead for the best results
6

Controls & Interface

Mouse / touch (drag and drop pieces). The game highlights valid moves when you select a piece, making it easy to see your options. The interface is designed to be intuitive for both beginners and experienced players.

  • Desktop: Click a piece to select, then click the target square (or drag and drop)
  • Mobile: Tap a piece to select, tap the target square (or drag and drop)
  • Valid moves are highlighted when you select a piece
  • The game enforces all rules automatically — no cheating possible!

Beginner Strategy Tips

Ready to go beyond the basics? Here are essential strategies that every checkers player should know:

  • Control the center: Center squares give your pieces more mobility and options
  • Protect your back row: Keep at least one piece on your back row to prevent easy kings
  • Trade when ahead: If you have more pieces, trading evenly increases your advantage
  • Advance in groups: Pieces support each other — don't send lone pieces forward
  • Force captures: Set up positions where the opponent must jump into a bad position
