The Strong announces the nominees for the 2021 National Toy Hall of Fame • The Toy Book
It’s that time of year again, as 12 iconic toys collide in a battle for a coveted spot at The Strong’s National Toy Hall of Fame in Rochester, New York.
This year’s finalists include famous brands and classic items. American Girl Dolls, Battleship, Billiards, Cabbage Patch Kids, Fisher-Price Corn Popper, Mahjong, Masters of the Universe, piñata, Risk, sand, The Settlers of Catan and the Toy Fire Truck were selected from thousands of nominees.
“These 12 toys represent the wide range of toys – from one of the world’s most universal toys like sand to a game-changing board game like Risk to the popular pool game for adults,” said Christopher Bensch, vice-president of collections at Le fort. “Whether old or new, for kids or adults, these 12 toy finalists have greatly influenced the world of play.”
Notably, this year’s lineup includes some past nominees who were unable to cross the finish line. The Fisher-Price Corn Popper has been vying for Hall of Fame entry since at least 2012 while He-Man, Skeletor, and the rest of the Masters of the Universe from Mattel slashed their power swords at the gates during of the past four years. .
Public voting is open until September 22 as part of a “Player’s Choice” ballot on toyhalloffame.org. The three toys that receive the most votes from the public will be submitted and join the other three submissions from members of the National Selection Advisory Committee.
INDUCTION CRITERIA INCLUDE:
- Icon status: the toy is widely recognized, respected and remembered;
- Longevity: the toy is more than a passing fad and has enjoyed popularity over several generations;
- Discovery: the toy promotes learning, creativity or discovery through play;
- Innovation: the toy has profoundly changed the conception of the game or the toy.
The latest 2021 Toy Inductees, chosen on the basis of the ballots, will be announced at The Strong Museum on Thursday, November 4 at 10:30 a.m.
