Street League Skateboarding Comes to Salt Lake City
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Sports) – The newest Olympic sport is coming to Salt Lake City this summer.
After taking a year off due to the pandemic, the Street League Skateboarding Tour will make one of its four stages in 2021 in Salt Lake City on August 27-28.
Paul Rodriguez is one of the most accomplished street skaters of all time. He’s a 4-time gold medalist at the X-games, and he considers Salt Lake City a natural fit as one of the four stages of the Street League Skateboarding Tour this summer.
“Salt Lake definitely has a strong skate community,” said Rodriguez, who will be competing when the tour arrives in Utah. “I have passed through Salt Lake on countless visits. Lots of good skate spots there. Great environment, great vibe, great people so it makes sense to do this in Salt Lake.
It’s not a big aerial sport like we saw on the big ramps when the Dew Tour was in Utah. It’s more about creativity and what skateboarders do with the obstacles you would see anywhere on the street.
“Like handrails, stairs, spaces and ledges,” Rodriguez said. “All you see us doing in there is a simulation that we simulate when we are skating on the street. One of my favorite things about street skating is that there is no limit to your creativity. If you can imagine something and you try hard enough, you can do it.
One thing Rodriguez couldn’t imagine growing up was that skateboarding would become an Olympic sport. But street skating will make its Olympic debut next month in Tokyo.
“I’m really excited about this,” Rodriguez said. “This is the perfect time for skateboarding to hit the world stage, as this one is being released to so many new eyeballs. Hope we get a lot of people with a new interest in skateboarding. “
Some of these Olympians will compete in Salt Lake with never-before-seen tricks.
“The progress is really really amazing,” Rodriguez said. “Especially now that social media is so ubiquitous, you now have a new level of stuff coming out almost every day. [Fans’] minds will be blown away. The level of technical skateboarding we’re going to have is going to be world class. “
The SLS will also make stops in Los Angeles, Miami and Jacksonville this year.
