Sheffield United lead the race to sign James McAtee on loan from Manchester City

Sheffield United are leading the race to loan Manchester City youngster James McAtee this summer.

Athleticism reported in July that City would be ready to loan the 19-year-old due to interest in him this summer, despite their belief that he will be ready for the first team in the next 12-18 months.

Brighton & Hove Albion, Southampton and Leicester City had all asked about permanent moves, but the reigning Premier League champions dismissed them out of hand.

Leeds United and Bournemouth have also been monitoring the situation throughout the summer but, for now, are not actively looking for midfield options.

McAtee himself is determined to break through at City and any loan decision will be based on which club can offer him the most minutes at a competitive level, with a view to his return to the Etihad Stadium next summer ready to play regularly .

Sheffield United have been pushing hard for McAtee’s services and City are impressed with their handling of England youth international Morgan Gibbs-White, who made 32 appearances for them while on loan last season.

There is hope at Bramall Lane that a deal could be done by the end of the week.

City are keen to ensure that any club loaning McAtee are prepared to give him significant playing time as they recognize a loan could help prepare him for a bigger role next season.
