Shane Wright, the fourth pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, will join the Coachella Valley Firebirds on a conditional loan, the team announced Sunday night.
Wright, 18, was with the Firebirds’ NHL affiliate, the Seattle Kraken, early in the season. Wright has recorded one assist in seven games for the Kraken, in limited action this season. He hasn’t played in the team’s last five games, despite being active.
A conditional loan allows a player to participate in the American Hockey League for up to five games and/or 14 days. Given that schedule, Wright is not expected to be on the ice when the Firebirds begin play at Acrisure Arena on Dec. 18 against the Tucson Roadrunners.
Despite being one of the few teenagers in the NHL, Wright has played seven games this season with the Kraken and recorded one assist. Wright previously had 160 points (71 goals, 89 assists) in 121 OHL games with the Kingston Frontenacs and was considered the top NHL draft-eligible prospect before falling to the Kraken ranked fourth in July.
In the 2019–20 season, Wright earned league honors for most goals by a rookie (39) and most points by a rookie (66), and was named rookie of the year in the CHL and OHL. Wright also helped lead Team Canada to a gold medal at the 2021 U-18 World Junior Championship and was recognized as a top 3 player on the team.
Coachella Valley travels to Calgary this week for a pair of games against the Wranglers on Tuesday November 22 and Thursday November 24.
