Navigate the shady streets of New York with De Niro
In Alfred Hitchcock’s founding psychological thriller, a former police detective (James Stewart) struggling with a new fear of heights and dizziness becomes obsessed with a mysterious woman (Kim Novak). Significant for being the first film to use the dolly zoom to create a distorted sense of perception, a famous movement used in Jaws, Goodfellas and most of the Spike Lee joints. valley girl (1983)
Freely based on Romeo and Juliet, this teen romantic comedy follows a preppy girl from the valley (Deborah Foreman) who falls in love with a rebellious punk from “Holly-weird” (Nicolas Cage, in his lead role), over the objections of her haughty and superficial friends . Watch for the only soundtrack from the ’80s, which features hits from Psychedelic Furs, Men at Work and more. Open-air cinema at the OMSI, September 9.
Taxi driver (1976)
One of Martin Scorsese’s masterpieces, this nocturnal character study follows Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro), the titular taxi driver, as he navigates the shady streets of New York City and faces his own mental state which deteriorates. Harvey Keitel, Cybill Shepherd, Albert Brooks and a co-star of 12-year-old Jodie Foster. 35mm screens. Hollywood, September 9.
When a frustrated artist (Michael Beck) meets his dream girl (Olivia Newton-John), who is secretly a muse sent from Olympus to rekindle his creativity, he becomes inspired to create a nightclub called Xanadu. The inimitable Gene Kelly co-stars in his latest film performance, memorable tap dancing on roller skates. Hollywood, September 10.
Whale rider (2002)
In this heartwarming family drama, a 12-year-old Maori girl named Pai (Keisha Castle-Hughes, whose performance earned her an Oscar nomination) is determined to succeed her father as chief of her tribe, but her great -paternalistic father insists that the role is reserved for men. However, Pai doesn’t get discouraged, determined to defy tradition and prove him wrong. Clinton, September 13.
