Erik Ellington x Li-Ning Debut Skate Collection
Skateboarding legend Erik Ellington teams up with
The sneakers take inspiration from the vintage basketball and running shoes Ellington wore as a child and are a blend of retro-inspired style and modern performance. “The tongue flap is a tribute to the double tongues we used to wear on our shoes in the mid-90s. With this design we have explored new combinations of materials that have never found their way onto. a skate shoe before, like the ripstop toe cage and double-tongue sealed flap, ”says Ellington. “I was looking for a new story to tell through performance design. When Li-Ning approached me about a partnership to launch his first skate collection, it seemed like a good fit. They effortlessly combine style and function in a way that stands out from other sports brands.
This drop is also inspired by New York City and its ever-flourishing skating scene and easy ’90s attitude. “The best style is always effortless. Skateboarders that I grew up idolizing like Tom Penny, Keenan Milton, Mark Gonzales and Kareem Campbell didn’t try to look cool, they just did. When I approached the Li-Ning x Ellington, I thought about the sneakers I had designed in the past and merged key elements to create a futuristic skate shoe, ”said Ellington.
To capture the energy of this historic collection, street photographer Lukas Gansterer produces a raw and candid campaign lookbook seen above, featuring skaters Zach Allen, Tinga Johnson and Davey Sayles in New York City.
The Li-Ning x Erik Ellington Signature model retails for $ 180 and will be available in three colourways: “Astro Pop”, “Polar Night” and “Tropicana”. The shoes will be available at US retailers KCDC, Andrew Downtown, Black Sheep, Kingswell and Humidity, and globally at SSENSE and Luisa Via Roma on July 30. The accompanying clothes will be released later this year.
