A few months after getting divorced, a man in China decided to sue his former stepson to recoup some of the money he had spent raising him.
According to Chinese media outlet Shanhai, the man, surnamed Tang, asked his former son-in-law Liu to pay 35,200 yuan ($5,285) as compensation for “living expenses” incurred while at university. The money covered room and board over four years, the outlet reported on Tuesday.
Tang married Liu’s mother in 2009, when the boy was 10 years old. Mr Tang helped raise the child until September 2021, when his wife filed for divorce, according to the outlet. Tang then filed a lawsuit against his former stepson about three months after he separated from his ex-wife.
The case sparked wide debate on social media, with the hashtag “stepfather asks stepson for 30,000 yuan in post-divorce living expenses” garnering over 150 million views on the type platform. Weibo Twitter.
Many people were dismayed by Tang’s decision to sue Liu.
“Even after raising the child for 10 years, it doesn’t seem like he ever treated him like a son. It’s so sad,” one Weibo user commented.
Last month, a local court in Chongqing city dismissed Tang’s claim, ruling that the expenses were voluntarily paid, according to the South China Morning Post.
“Tang chose to support Liu, even though he knew he had no legal responsibility to pay for his college education because Liu had reached the age of 18. In China, children are legal adults once they turn 18. years, and parents are no longer expected to cover their living expenses,” the presiding judge said, according to the outlet.
