Delhi Police on Tuesday claimed they had evidence against Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair that he received Rs 50 lakhs in his bank account in the past three months.

Police said they were investigating the source of the funding and could take him to Bangalore on Wednesday to collect his laptop.

Earlier in the day, a city court extended Zubair’s custodial interrogation by four days, a day after he was arrested by Delhi police for an objectionable tweet he posted in 2018 against a Hindu deity.

Amid growing calls for the journalist’s immediate release, Delhi police claimed before Metropolitan Chief Magistrate Snigdha Sarvaria that the accused was following a trend where he used religious tweets in a bid to gain fame.

It was a deliberate effort on his part to create social discord and hurt religious feelings, police said. The defendant, however, alleged that the police abused their power and wanted a “fishing investigation”.
