KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Missouri Supreme Court has overturned the convictions of a Kansas City man who spent 16 years in prison for a murder he and others argue he did not commit .

In a two-paragraph order quashing Keith Carnes’ convictions on Tuesday, the state High Court also ordered that Keith Carnes be released from jail within 30 days unless prosecutors decide to retry him.

Carnes has been in jail since 2006 after being convicted of the 2003 murder of a Kansas City man, but some witnesses have since recanted their testimony used to convict him.

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt had pleaded to keep Carnes behind bars.
