Boruto Just Got His Most Heartfelt Gift From Sasuke

The following contains spoilers for Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Chapter 69, “Captives,” by Masashi Kishimoto, Mikio Ikemoto, Mari Morimoto, and Snir Aharon, now available in English on Viz Media.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the Boruto The lore has been how the Hokage’s son bonded with Sasuke. Many thought Sasuke would be annoyed that Boruto reminded him of Naruto, but Ranger Uchiha saw something incomprehensibly special. Sure, there was even greater raw power than Sasuke or Naruto possessed, but he spotted something even more: Boruto’s heart.

This is why the patient and mature Sasuke became Boruto’s teacher, to the point that his own daughter, Sarada, got upset because of the mentorship. Ironically, in chapter 69 of the manga, Boruto and Sasuke evolved their bond one step further when the Konoha legend gave him the most perfect gift ever.

It’s the item he’s always wanted to own – Sasuke’s desecrated headband. Now Boruto had it in his possession for a while, but he was on loan. Sasuke just wanted Boruto to feel like an elite shinobi at the time, so he didn’t mind lending that token. However, the official gift of it holds great significance while connecting the Hidden Leaf’s past to its present.

This happened when Sasuke met Boruto, apologizing for not being able to be there for the war against Code. More so, he’s sorry that he wasn’t there to help Boruto when Kawaki killed him after Momoshiki took over the child’s body. Boruto admitted that it was fine because he recovered physically, and it allowed him to control the alien inside. Emotionally, it was cool that Kawaki did as he asked, showing great determination to kill his “brother” before Momoshiki could rewrite his body.

This sent Sasuke back to when he himself was a weapon of mass destruction, trying to destroy Konoha and enslave the free ninja world during his teenage years. Luckily, Naruto never thought of killing him, though Sasuke isn’t sure he’d do the same if the tables were turned. That said, when Boruto returned the blindfold, thinking Sasuke’s lesson was over, the Ranger told him to keep it.

He knew how important the scratched coin was to Boruto and thought it would be helpful in the most emotional way. After all, it represented loyalty – a test Sasuke failed when Orochimaru and the Akatsuki corrupted him. Sasuke berated Konoha at the time, but was granted at Naruto’s request.

Thus, he wants Boruto to keep the memory not just as an heirloom, but because he can act as a totem if he’s tempted to abandon the Hidden Leaf and turn his back on his family. It’s a cerebral, yet genuine piece of Sasuke’s soul, which left Boruto happy. He loves Naruto but Sasuke is his idol, which means he’s going to celebrate that for a while.
