After weeks of training against each other on The Ultimate Fighter 30, former bantamweight (and current featherweight) champion Amanda Nunes says she really didn’t learn anything about rival Julianna Pena in the show.
Speaking at this week’s UFC 277 media day – the card’s headlining pair – Nunes said that aside from Pena being a little quirky, she really has nothing learned about the woman who shockingly beat her last December.
“I just think she’s weird. She’s like in her own world there, and I’m always doing my own thing,” Nunes (21-5) explained, adding that two twos have only really seen each other a few times, outside of fights. “But she’s still on her phone, doing other things, not looking at me. It’s like, you know what girl? You stay here, and do what we came here to do, and that’s it. So I [didn’t] learn nothing about her.
Despite Pena’s lack of “strange” interaction, “The Lioness” likes having a rival in the vein of Anderson Silva-Chael Sonnen and Jon Jones-Daniel Cormier.
“Absolutely. I actually love it,” Nunes exclaimed. “Julianna really turned me on. I like this. It kinda happened with me and Valentina [Shevchenko], and that was great too. Like I said, he was the opponent I needed. Now I feel like she’s really bringing that fire back. So I can’t wait until Saturday.
If things work out in her favor, Nunes is open to what would no doubt be a massive trilogy fight with Pena. But, she says, she’s also open to other options.
“It’s in the UFC. Now it’s just about the UFC, what they want to see. For my part, I am open to everything. There are a lot of girls there, and no matter what, I will be ready to fight. I just don’t wanna take this [many] rest days, I want to try to come back as soon as possible. But let’s see what the UFC is going to tell me to do, because you never know, you know? It could be Julianna, it could be so many girls there.
